A Modest Proposal
In New York City, approximately 1 out of 106 New Yorkers are homeless. Many problems can rise due to homelessness, and the idea of simply living on the streets has a very negative effect on the person both physically and psychologically. A person who is homeless is more prone to misusing drugs, getting incarcerated, having a low self esteem, along with other difficulties that can threaten their lives. A huge threat toward these people’s health has to be the weather above all things. Cold weather and exeptionally high temperatures are too much to deal with, considering homeless people don’t have a place to turn to where they would be safe from this. Homeless people all have different backgrounds and their situation may not have even been a result of their actions, so helping them find shelter would give them hope and especially because they are at risk.
What I am coming forward with will be a simple solution to this huge problem. I propose to build hotels for homeless people to sleep and stay in, to avoid distracting those around them who are not unsheltered. A lot of these people are continuing to spend their time in public places that are not hygienic and overall dangerous for one to stay in. By building one in each neighborhood, residents of the areas wouldn’t need to worry about these people and it would make both sides happy knowing that this issue finally had been solved. Surrounding residents should not worry. The hotels will have an appealing look and great hospitality, so havings living near these places will not disrupt or take away from the unique value or reputation each neighborhood presents. It may even be a loving sight, seeing how the hotels will be made for the purpose of helping others, and will continue to inspire any number of people to spread the good in life. The people living in these hotels will be provided with great service and it will be complete with all the facilities you can think of. No matter how many shelters get built, they do not guarantee a good solution to this ongoing issue due to how the treatment will not compare to the high end service in the hotels I am planning to issue. Ensuring comfort in the hotels will guarantee the solution that all homeless people will stay in these hotels, and therefore, homelessness will no longer be a problem due to how it doesn’t exist. If people randomly become homeless without warning, the hotels will exist as a safe space to turn to in the future. The whole plan is beneficial towards the people as a whole, since everyone will officially have a roof over their heads.
The plan would benefit both the homeless, because they are getting a place to stay, and the other population, because the topic is worrisome, and knowing that homeless people will be taken care of will prevent other people from seeing them in public spaces that should not be used as a place to stay in. Because of all the worrying problems circulating New York City at the moment, it is important for New Yorkers to remember that even though there will be an increase in taxes, it will solely be focused on assisting and taking care of the homeless, because New Yorkers should especially help each other out amidst the current problems. Take into consideration that it’s not always a choice to become homeless, it could happen to anyone, which is why making sure everyone has shelter is so crucial. People could throw out the fact that it would be costly, but if it’s for the benefit of a group that urgently needs help, it would definitely be worth it. The government will be funding the whole operation, so money will not be a complication. With no one other than the government putting in the effort in making this plan happen, homeless people and New Yorkers in general can sit back and relax while the issue is being handled to the greatest extent! Overall, there would be no reason as to why homeless people will want to reject the idea, considering how there is nothing nonagreeable to this pitch.
