Bowling: Sport or hobby?
January 9, 2017
SIs bowling a sport? For centuries it has been considered a sport. There are worldwide tournaments and championships, and don’t all major sports such as basketball and football have championships and competitions? So why are people now questioning whether or not bowling is a sport? So we went around the iSchool and asked 5 people if they considered bowling is a sport or not, and here is what they had to say.
Kayin Olajide, a 12th grade student at the iSchool, said, “Bowling should not be considered a sport because it takes no athleticism like running and it’s more about skill and accuracy.”
Ms. Calvo, a Spanish teacher at the iSchool, thinks that it’s not a sport but if it is, it should be considered more of a hobby.
Learning specialist Ms. Wallace thinks it actually is a sport because “it has the same requirements as any other sport like basketball and soccer.
Physics teacher Mr. Smolka said it is a sport because his great grandfather was a hall of fame pro bowler. Along with that, he said it requires skill and it involve a ball.
English teacher Ms. Mangano said that bowling is a sport because there’s a specific technique for bowling the ball.
Bowling originated in 1930 and has been a pastime ever since. Many people play bowling and consider it more a hobby. But some consider bowling more of a sport.
All in all, this topic is a wildly debatable topic and has many viewpoints to it. People can see this in either way. Out of the people we interviewed, more people see bowling as a sport for the following reasons: it requires skill and it has some of the same elements major sports have such as hand-eye coordination and accuracy.
