Bombings In Aleppo
January 10, 2017
You have probably heard about the civil war that is happening in Syria. The city of Aleppo has been divided since 2012. What was once Syria’s commercial centre is now in ruins. There have been 400,000 deaths since the start of the civil war.
The war is between Syrian President Bashar Al-Asaad and a group of fighters known as the rebels who want him out of power. Syrian’s allegiance to Russia have left Syrians at odds, with them negatively affected by their alliance with this country.
Russia announced in 2015 that they would militarily intervene in Syria. Many bombings have fallen on the rebel troops, strengthening Asaad’s position. People are left homeless, with little food and water. Now, pediatricians have been dying off leaving few doctors left in cities.
At least 45 people were just killed on November 20th and dozens were injured. Rebels forces have Eastern Aleppo with airstrikes. The bombings lasted all day and overnight. Thousands have lost their homes, children, parents and siblings.
The Syrian Observatory for Human rights received dozens of air raids and artillery attacks, too. This hit 18 different neighborhoods.
There has been much controversy as to how we can help the people of Syria. If the US gets involved, it can put citizens at odds as well as the Syrians.
Sadie Krichmar claims “The U.S needs to not only let people in but help them once they’re in. They need to give them good medical and physical treatment because many people have been mentally scarred and have dealt through so much trauma. We can’t forget about that.”
Sophomore Danny Goyette said that “we can send help over there but it would be beneficial if we got people out of there. The US has a lot of space that we can provide them.”
The U.S has enough space and jobs for new people to come into the country. But would the U.S risk the safety of the citizens and their homes?
Matthew Bajor also believes that “we should provide them with homes and jobs and a safe place for them. These people been through too much.”
Currently, thousands are still waiting for evacuation from East Aleppo. Buses have been in and out of these territories, intending to migrate people to safer areas of Syria.
The U.S has been trying all possible ways to save these people from this country, hoping for a possible solution.
