Buzzfeed was the buzz of everyone’s feed in 2016. As of March 2016, Buzzfeed’s viewers skyrocketed at about 9 million views a month, with 50% of its views coming from ages 18-34.  Buzzfeed was the main source of news for teens and young adults.

Originally founded in 2006, by John Johnson and Jonah Peretti, who had one simple idea of making a viral content blog. They had no idea that Buzzfeed would be the next big news source for teens and adults.

With over 200 million unique monthly visitors and 7 billion monthly content views, it has become one of the most popular media websites to date.

Buzzfeed has a wide variety of features on their website, including: Videos, Quizzes, food reviews, etc…

Cade Smith, a sophomore at the NYC iSchool, said, “Buzzfeed used to be a fun way to learn about the current news. Now it’s just about drama with celebrities and quizzes telling you which Disney princess you are.’”

Jasper Willey, a freshman at the NYC school, thinks negatively towards Buzzfeed and its functionality as well. “Now Buzzfeed’s main audience are feminists and women more than anything. It’s quite annoying to be honest.”

However, Buzzfeed’s involvement in very controversial material like their “Black People Questions”  video sparked a lot of hatred towards the company.

Margareta Stern, an avid Buzzfeed user, said, “The one thing that Buzzfeed is most known for is its ability to bring people together through the commonalities shared in their articles and videos. It’s just a great way to relate and share ideas with people who have the same views as you.”
