The NYC iSchool is located in lower Manhattan.. This is a very unique school where there are many modules that students can pick from such as, Mock Election, Multilingual, Human Microbiome, Keeping History Alive. and iNews. Every module is different from each other. In each module, students learn and experience real world issues.. Students work on their projects individually or with their groups. This is a way to improve their skills and deeply understand the topics that they’re learning about.
Modules last 9 weeks, and students can pick a new module every quarter. In each module class, you can find students from different grades who would most likely have the same interest as you at least, the same module interest as you.
Mock Election:
Photography is an important part of this module where the photographer records the important moments during the debate, such as the one between two candidates running for mayor ,and later on it could be an important source for the class projects. The photographer usually take pictures from different angles to show what they want to show their audience.
Before the battle begins, students get into groups and do some research in order to have a higher chance of winning. The equipment is usually checked as well so that there are no errors when the debates start.
Checking out one of the candidates? NO. Dexter Dore is a freshman from NYC iSchool is trying to edit the picture of one of the candidate, Cade Smith, so that he could make some posters for him in order to persuade others to vote for him.
Except for photographers taking pictures of the presenters, others have to videotape the whole entire situation for the teachers or students to look back at when they need to. Every little detail of their debate is important since everything they said could be considered in the final election.
The burning gaze that Kevin Barry, a candidate, is giving the other candidate, Cade Smith, is a fierce one. One of the main things about the debate in Mock Election is how they are trying to capture the audience’s attention by persuading them with their key points on improving this city.
Multilingual World:
Students in Multilingual World are trying to research about Nigeria and other parts of the world to preserve those languages that are endangered. The maps on the wall show the information of certain locations that they’re researching about.
Groups of students are trying to discuss how they should design and renew their information so that people could keep up with the news about Nigeria. They are discussing the design of the website.
Adjo Adjegan, a freshman at the NYC iSchool, is trying to ask Mobi Martin, a junior, about the endangered language such as, Ruma, Kagoro, Taznatit, etc where in total there are less than a million speakers who speak the language, and Martin speaks Igbo. Since he speaks the language, getting data from him could really help finish the website.
Writing a report about Nigeria and searching other cultural informations, which would be posted on their official website.
Human Microbiome:
In this module, students learn about the basic concepts of human microbiology and then explore the roles that microorganisms play in our world. Students look at the recent studies and investigate the questions that have not been answered yet.
Ms. Klimowicz, a Living Environment teacher and the teacher of this module, walks around the class and helps the students when they work on their projects.
Students are trying to cut out the different pieces of their worksheet so that they can finish their project about human microbiomes. Students learn about the different cells and germs that can’t see with only your eyes but with some resources such as, microscope.
Keeping History Alive:
In Keeping History Alive, students taking notes and learning about the biography of a historian.
Ms. Strassler, the teacher of this module, is teaching her students more about the historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. In this module listening is very important because they have to listen so that they can deeply understand what happened to the historians.
After the slideshows, students started watching videos about Henry Louis Jr. After the iMuseum, they study historians and important figures in history. iMuseum is where students bring in some items that have stories in them and history behind them, and then they present them like in a real museum.
iNews:
Henry Katchuba, an iNews reporter, edits his article so that the article is accurate for the audience to read. Articles that are published should be accurate, including the quotes from their resources and the whole entire statement in the article.
iNew reporters are given reporter’s passes so they can go out and interview people. This is a very special pass because students from other modules don’t have any passes like these!
This is the main website page for iNews. Everything that is published is categorized by sections such as News, Features, Arts and Entertainment, Humor, Opinions, etc.
Whether you like your module at the end of the day or not, you would still have to try your best and learn from the module. Every module is based on real world problems, issues, and situations. Students learn and develop more skills that helps them in real life.
