A typical school day of a student athlete

More stories from Jessica Zhuang

Many students participate in sports, whether it is for their school or outside sports leagues. However, playing a sport is an investment of time and lots of energy. Time management between school work and sports activities can be challenging to control. Here is how a typical school day for a student athlete looks like, it is a day in my busy life as a student and a member of the iSchool and Chelsea high school’s public school athletic league girls varsity basketball team.

Here I am packing my basketball sneakers and clothes that I will change into for practice the next day.

Arriving at the E. 180 Street subway station at 7:00 a.m.

Waiting for the train near the front of the platform, where it’s usually less crowded.

The downtown 2 train arrives at the station.
This is the NYC iSchool, located in SoHo, New York. it is a public high school that I attend, and I usually arrive here at around 8:20. My daily train ride takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.

Working on a Polygon worksheet in my first period Geometry class. Before this class, I went to office hours from 8:20a.m to 8:59 a.m for extra help.

I huddle in these hallways and wait for my next class; today its rather less crowded with students.

Today I stay in the Student Commons during lunch to finish most of my assignments; I am struggling to accomplish some work in order to make time for basketball practice after school.

This is a picture I took when I pass by the student commons for my next class, it shows the Theatre Production club getting ready for an upcoming performance.

Around 3:25, the weather is quiet foggy, but the busy streets of New York is something I witness everyday when I walk to the Canal Street 1 train station.

I am walking to the 1 train station and on my way to my basketball game ahead of the rest of my team.

Arriving at the 1 train station, I will transfer to the 2 or 3 train at 14th street.

The game has begun, and here is a player from the guest team releasing her free throw shot, while the other players are lining up on both sides, perpendicular to the free throw line, for the rebound, using the boxing out technique.

The iSchool & Chelsea team won in the game; players including myself then meet with the head coach and established the next practice date together.
