The 75th annual Golden Globe Awards was broadcasted live this January 7th, and it was quite the event. Most people in attendance including servers dressed in black to show support for the victims of sexual assault in the Hollywood industry.

Twitter was trending with tweets using the “Me too” hashtag with people sharing their stories of sexual assault and harassment, along with the “Times up” hashtag meant as an anti- sexual harassment initiative.

Ms. Klimowicz, a science teacher here at the iSchool, stated, “I thought that it was a really great idea for all the celebrities to use a popular event like this award show to spread awareness for the mistreatment towards women.”

The night included appearances from presenters like Jennifer Aniston, Zac Efron, Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson, Kit Harington, Viola Davis, Halle Berry, Seth Rogen, Kerry Washington and even Oprah Winfrey who received the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award.

When receiving her award, Winfrey gave a touching speech about sexual harassment and the Time’s Up movement. She ended her speech with cheers and applause from the whole crowd, and said, “So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say “Me too” again.”

A freshman at the NYC iSchool, Duncan Levine, stated, “I think it’s really great that all these celebrities can get together to support such a great cause especially during this time that, that support is needed.”

Another freshman here at the iSchool, Arman Celebi, stated, “I didn’t get to watch the golden globe awards, but I heard a lot about the Me Too movement that was going on and I think it’s a good thing that the way women are treated in the industries is being addressed.

Everybody attending the Golden Globe Awards came dressed in black clothes except for Blanca Blanco who wore a bright red velvet, floor length dress with thigh-high slit and exposed midriff not leaving much to the imagination.

When asked about why she came dressed in red, Blanco stated, “Wearing red does not mean I am against the movement. I applaud and stand by the courageous actresses that continue to break the cycle of abuse through their actions and fashion style choices. It is one of many factors leading women to a safer place because of their status. I am excited about the #TimesUp movement; true change is long overdue.”

Mr. Snyder, an English teacher at the iSchool said, “I thought it was a great idea to use such a popular event to spread awareness but it’s important that we keep this mentality throughout this whole process instead of forgetting about it after the award show.”

Jordan Hank, a sophomore at the iSchool who enjoys watching the award show every year said “I was really disappointed that this year, a lot of great movies missed out on awards because of movies that were overhyped, Ladybird included.”
