When it comes to music, we all have favorite musicians who we tend to listen to, as well as genres we frequent. A very popular genre among teenagers is rap/hip-hop, and two of the most-liked and successful rappers are Drake and Kendrick Lamar -two guys who write, produce and perform their own music.

Aubrey “Drake” Graham is an American rapper who was born on October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Canada. He always had a passion for performing for others since his father was a drummer for musician Jerry Lee Lewis. Before he became a successful Grammy award winner, he was an actor on the popular television show called “Degrassi” and played a character named Jimmy Brooks.

Sophomore Lila Borges considers Drake as one of her favorite rappers:“He always has really good beats and his lyrics are good as well and when I first heard his music I ended up loving his music and his style.”

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth is also an American rapper and songwriter was born on born June 17, 1987, in Compton, California. When he was a teenager, he always wanted to be a successful rapper. After releasing many mixtapes and independent albums, Interscope as well as  Aftermath Entertainment. signed him in 2012.

Dustin Brito, also a sophomore who is a big fan of Kendrick Lamar, said, “All of his songs have some sort of story behind it. When you read the lyrics and understand what he’s trying to say to like the song.”

“Which rapper is better?” Many say Kendrick and many say Drake, so some iSchool students weighed in on the topic.

Sophomore Tariq Smith feels like Kendrick Lamar is truly the best:  “When I hear Kendrick Lamar I know his music has a good message behind it and it’s not all just violence.” He one of his main reasons he likes him more than Drake “I like him a lot because he’s really rapping about problems in the poor neighborhood and the people in them.”

Jasmine Gebreyesus also likes Kendrick Lamar and sees him better than Drake. “Ever since I first started listening to him in 2012 to me I feel like he is reclaiming corporate identity and using pop culture to improve communication. To me he’s honestly a G.O.A.T. though, I’m not saying Drake is horrible I just think Kendrick is better.”

While many students are on the Kendrick Lamar side some students feel like Drake is the real G.O.A.T.

Ohema Boone however feels like Drake has the crown as one of the best rappers “My friend recommended me to listen to him because she thought that he had a really great voice and she just loved his music so she told me to listen to him and then I ended up loving his music and his style of writing lyrics and stuff like that.”

Lila Borges also had more to say about Drake and why she sticks with him. “I listening to him because of some of the situations that he’s been through it’s kind of similar to what I’ve been so I can just kind of relate and connect to certain things.”

Many students have different opinions towards these two rappers, now it’s up to you to choose who’s your G.O.A.T.?
