NY HILTON MIDTOWN – On November 9, 2016, at 2:50 a.m., Donald J. Trump made his victory speech. Trump has become the nation’s president-elect.

It was shocking day for many New Yorkers, especially those here at the iSchool. Students and staff awaited restlessly to find out the election results.

“Dred Scott, Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X and all the people who died due to police brutality are rolling in their graves,” Mary Elhakam, a junior, avowed.

Although Hillary was ahead by 200,000 popular votes, Trump received 51 more electoral votes.

Many states flipped their political opinion this election. Nobody flipped to the Democratic side, but Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Iowa, and Florida flipped to the Republican side.

Jake Anderson, a senior, said,“she [Hillary] has no appeal to blue collar Americans/middle America. She appeals to minorities, but the vote she needed was the blue collar because they make up most of America.”

It’s been 8 years since a Republican has been in the White House. Now not only do we have a Republican as Commander in Chief, but Republicans also have full control of the House and Senate.

“Disappointed,” is how Ms. Coleridge summed up her reaction.

Angelis Harvey, a junior, stated, “I think trump should not have won the election, he is not a good candidate he has no experience with politics and quite frankly we don’t know what he wants to do for this country.”

Although many iSchool staff and students were slow to get over the initial shock of it all, presently, they are transitioning into a state of ‘now what?’

Aissata Diallo, a freshman, holds the belief that,“Donald trump shouldn’t have won,” continued on to say, “…but now i’m kind of curious to see what he’s going to do…like will he do something good?”
