Getting+to+know+the+modules+of+iSchool

Have you ever wondered what a module was like before taking it?

At the NYC iSchool, there are a wide variety of unique and interesting classes, especially in our modules. From science to forensics to mock elections, each module at iSchool is a one-of-a-kind class.

Down below is a list of some of the many iSchool modules. In it is a quick description, what the final project is like, and a few quotes for some of the modules.

Science:
iSchool Biodiversity: Learn about iSchool’s ecosystem, the species around our school, plantlife, the types of trees that are around our school, etc. Your final project is to go out and do something that will benefit in the ecosystem (i.e., planting flowers, setting up tree guards, etc.)
Easton Brashares, 17, mentioned: “Saw some very interesting documentaries, and learned about the importance of biodiversity and how we depend on each other.”

Astrobiology: Learn about whether or not there is life on other planet and about the universe. You make a project based on a field of interest, and you hold a museum exhibit in the lab.
Brendan Welch, a junior, called the module: “Fantastic. It was honestly such a great class and I loved every minute of it. If I could, I’d take it again.”

Teen Health Awareness: Learn about sexual health, staying safe, consent, healthy relationships, and being comfortable with yourself and others. You construct a project based upon a subject in sexual health, (i.e., HIV/AIDS, pregnancy, etc) and you hold an gallery.

Clean Water Crisis: Learn about the process of how water is cleaned and the different methods in doing so. The final project is
William Dickinson ‘18 said that the module was “A pretty alright class, packed with information. It’s kind of hard and there is a bit of work to do, but it pays off.”

English:
Public Forum: Learn about a topic daily and argue about it. Spend the rest of class preparing a making two (pros and cons) argumentative essays and debating about it.
“Action-packed. Be prepared every day. Lots of notes and arguments. I would recommend this to people who like to debate and talk about controversial topics.” said Riley White ‘18.

Nuclear Proliferation: Learn about how we store nuclear waste, how it works, the laws behind it, the atomic bombings of Japan and the incident at Chernobyl, etc. You create a PSA (either as a video or poster) and display it in the Commons.
Nick Lief ‘19, said the module: “was awesome, and I really enjoyed it. It was a great learning experience, and it was cool getting to meet a Hiroshima survivor.”

iNews: You get to learn how write articles, learn how to correctly make one, learn basic journalist strategies, etc. Your final project is to create three articles and a video to upload on the iSchool’s news site.

Literary Magazine: Learn about different writing styles, practice them, and come up with original pieces. Everyone works together to create a literary magazine filled with prose and other kinds of literary styles.

History:
Reel Global History: You get to learn about history through films analysis of the films. Your final project is to earn about a certain topic in global history, watch a movie about it, and teach a global class about the historical context of it.

Mock Election: You host a mock presidential election, hold debates in class, make up questions for candidates, opening and closing statement. You can advertise it in school by making posters, surveying people, and telling others.
Shanai Williams ‘19, says: “It was really fun. It showed me the sort of behind the scenes of an election and the campaign and stuff.”

As you can see, the many modules of iSchool cover a variety of topics, real world problems, and current events. They’re all unique in their own ways, and based on what interests you, you should choose which one you’d like to take next.
