A Modest Proposal

A major talking point of U.S politics is immigration, they always talk about how they should keep the Mexicans out, but they never give a better solution than just putting up a wall and enforcing the immigration patrol that is already there. The problem is not that there is a lot of immigration from South America and Central American countries and even if we are being sent back to their countries, they are always coming back in bigger numbers getting more people caught at the border and being sent back to their countries. After research and looking at data, studies have shown that short people have a much better capacity to run longer distances due to the fact that they require less oxygen than taller people do, due to their size. South and Central American countries have a majority of the population consisting of short people usually around 5ft-5ft 7in, this makes them perfect to cross the border on foot and even get into tight spaces inside vehicles. For those people who manage to cross the border and decide to walk or run to a safe house, it is almost as if they were built to run farther and longer distances due to their size. According to Short ‘N’ Sure “short people have better endurance and need less oxygen as compared to taller people. This fact acts as an anchor for the running events; and help shorter runners to deliver a consistent performance”. I propose that we create a program for those people who have been caught at the border and put in detention camps, to feed and nurture them to grow bigger in height and size, therefore, making them a lot less capable of completing the journey to the United States. We can offer a stipend to the women in these centers to have children using specimens from donors who are tall people. This would make the offspring of these women have a much higher possibility to have tall genes.

Taller people would be easier to spot when they are coming through the darkness and trying to crouch down while they go through the deserts in the United States. Their size would also make it impossible for them to fit in the tightest places that other traveler would be able to fit into, like under a car, in the trunk of a car, smushed in between a very tight space. They would just be too easy to spot when trying to smuggle them through the border. Their physical composition would also give them the disadvantage of needed a lot more resources like water and food in order to survive, and when travelling in massive groups where everyone is trying to survive for themselves and make it to the United states, you need to have all the energy to be able to make it through the long walks. The only ways they would be able to immigrate here would be by ship where they can hide under everything, but even then, the smallest travelers have died while trying this method of travel. Whilst the demand of people who are trying to get out of their countries grows, the methods and people who would be able to get these people across the border shrinks. The tightening of Secutiy across the US-Mexico border has grown and immigrants are being caught by the hundreds. Feeding the younger children in order to make them grow much taller would not be a bad idea. Offering stipends and keeping families together would make it easier to convince them to leave in bigger bundles rather than having to face the problem of a few people slipping threw and having to go and catch them every few days. Giving stipends to those who severely need it, in order for them to go back to their country and start fresh would slow down how many people may need to come into the country. The children who are being fed and bred could be formed into great athletes and in South and Central American Countries, sports such as soccer, track and field, and boxing are one of the only ways to escape the poverty of their countries.

Being the child of an immigrant myself, talking about this idea makes it seem as if I am turning on my people, where my family has come from and what they had to go through to make a new life. But I want to look for a way to reduce the suffering and necesity of the people who travel here in search of wealth and happiness for their families. I’m not too small so I think crossing the border through small spaces would not be an issue, the fear of being caught and locked up like a dog is what would make me do anything to make sure I cross.
